Behind the Lens | Walter J. Cronk
I'm Walter, the guy behind Walter J. Cronk Photography. A U.S. Army veteran, photographer, and someone who's spent more than a few hours standing in the dirt, freezing in the woods, or waiting for that one moment worth capturing.
Based in East Lansing, Michigan, my photography covers a little bit of everything, from the adrenaline of motocross and college athletics to senior portraits, pets, wildlife, and fine art photography.
But no matter what's in front of my camera, my approach stays the same: Capture the moment as it happens. Keep it real. Let the photograph tell the story.
How It All Started
I've been interested in photography since I was a kid, but it wasn't until later in life that I decided to take it seriously.
After spending some time learning everything I could, I bought my first decent camera, a Canon Rebel T3i. I've made a few upgrades since then.
A friend eventually gave me the opportunity to photograph some Mixed Martial Arts events he was sponsoring. Being a lifelong sports fan, I was hooked pretty quickly.
That experience opened the door to sports photography, and in 2016, I got my first major opportunity photographing the International Champions Cup at Michigan Stadium.
Since then, I've photographed collegiate athletics, conference tournaments, motocross events, and other sporting events. My work has also appeared in publications across Michigan.
Beyond the Racetrack
As much as I enjoy the speed, noise, and chaos of sports photography, there's another side of photography that's just as important to me.
The outdoors.
Wildlife photography gives me a chance to slow down, observe, and appreciate the world around me. Whether it's a whitetail deer moving through the woods, a bald eagle perched in a tree, or a sunset along Lake Michigan, there's something about capturing those moments that never gets old.
That same appreciation for real moments carries over into my portraits and pet photography. I want to capture personality, character, and the things that make each subject unique.
More Than Just a Photograph
To me, photography has never been about simply pointing a camera and pressing a button.
It's about preserving a moment, telling a story, and creating something people will appreciate years down the road.
